Trunk Rotation With Cable
A cable-based rotational exercise targeting the obliques and core by rotating the torso against resistance.
Instructions
- Attach a handle or rope to a cable machine at mid-chest height
- Stand perpendicular to the cable machine with your feet shoulder-width apart
- Grip the handle with both hands at chest height, arms extended forward
- Keep your feet and lower body stationary throughout the movement
- Rotate your torso away from the cable machine, bringing the handle across your body
- Complete the rotation while keeping your arms relatively straight
- Return to the starting position with control
- Repeat for the desired number of repetitions, then perform equal reps on the opposite side
Tips
- The rotational motion activates the obliques and deep core muscles
- Keep your lower body stable; movement should come from rotation, not hip movement
- This can be performed seated or standing depending on equipment availability
- Maintain constant tension on the cable throughout the movement
- Control both the rotation and return phase for maximum effectiveness
- Start with lighter weight to establish proper form before progressing
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
