Wood Chop (Band)
A rotational core exercise using resistance bands that targets the obliques and entire core. Excellent for functional movement patterns and rotational power development.
Instructions
- Anchor a resistance band at chest height or slightly above.
- Stand perpendicular to the anchor point with feet shoulder-width apart.
- Grip the band handle with both hands at chest height, arms slightly bent.
- Rotate your torso, pulling the band across your body in a diagonal chopping motion downward.
- The movement should end with the band handle outside your opposite hip.
- Rotate back to the starting position with control.
- Complete all repetitions on one side, then switch sides and repeat.
Tips
- The movement comes from core rotation, not just arm movement.
- Keep your hips relatively stable while your torso rotates.
- Maintain a slight bend in your knees throughout the movement for stability.
- This movement pattern mimics many athletic and functional activities.
- The band provides excellent resistance throughout the full range of rotational motion.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
