Secondary Muscles
A yoga-inspired full-body stretch that opens the front of the body, stretching the chest, hip flexors, and anterior shoulders while strengthening the back muscles.
Instructions
- Begin by kneeling on a yoga mat or padded surface with knees hip-width apart.
- Position your hands on your lower back, fingers pointing downward for support.
- Engage your core and press your hips forward slightly.
- Begin to arch your back, using your hands for light support as you gently lean backward.
- If comfortable, release your hands and reach them toward your heels, increasing the back arch.
- Keep your neck neutral—avoid dropping your head too far back. You may look straight ahead or slightly upward.
- Feel the stretch across your chest, shoulders, and hip flexors.
- Hold this position for 15-30 seconds, breathing deeply and relaxing into the stretch.
- Return to the starting position slowly and carefully.
Tips
- Engage your core throughout to protect your lower back
- Do not force the backarch—move only to a comfortable depth
- Keep your hips directly above your knees throughout the movement
- This is an advanced flexibility stretch; beginners should start with hands on lower back
- Breathe deeply and relax into the stretch rather than pushing aggressively
- This pose opens the entire front of your body effectively
- Avoid this stretch if you have lower back or neck issues
