Deadlift Suitcase (Barbell)
A deadlift variation using a unilateral loading position, challenging lateral core stability while developing overall posterior chain strength.
Instructions
- Stand upright with feet hip-width apart next to a barbell positioned vertically on the ground.
- Bend at the hips and knees, approaching the barbell with your shoulders over it.
- Grip the barbell with one hand using an overhand or neutral grip while keeping your other arm free.
- Position your other foot slightly back or forward for balance and core stability.
- Keep your chest up and your back neutral as you initiate the lift.
- Drive through your heels by extending your hips and knees simultaneously.
- Fully extend your hips and knees at the top of the movement while maintaining upright posture.
- Lower the barbell back to the ground with control, reversing the movement.
- Perform equal repetitions on both sides for balanced development.
Tips
- This variation challenges your core significantly due to unilateral loading.
- Your obliques and lateral core muscles work hard to resist twisting.
- Maintain neutral spine alignment throughout the movement.
- Use lighter weight than bilateral deadlifts to maintain proper form and stability.
- Keep your shoulders level and resist rotation.
- This exercise builds functional strength and anti-rotation core stability.
