Primary Muscles

A bodyweight glute exercise performed lying on your back where you raise your hips upward to build strength and muscle.

Instructions

  1. Lie on your back with your feet flat on the floor and knees bent.
  2. Position your feet shoulder-width apart, directly under your knees.
  3. Keep your arms at your sides, palms down for support.
  4. Press through your heels to raise your hips as high as possible.
  5. Form a straight line from your knees through your hips to your shoulders.
  6. Squeeze your glutes hard at the top of the movement.
  7. Lower your hips back down in a controlled manner.

Tips

  • Drive through your heels, not your toes.
  • Maintain tension by avoiding full hip relaxation at the bottom.
  • Squeeze the glutes maximally at the top of each rep.
  • Keep your core engaged to protect your lower back.
  • This can be performed for time or reps as a bodyweight exercise.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
