A beginner-friendly isolation exercise for the oblique muscles performed lying on your back, targeting the lateral core.

Instructions

  1. Lie flat on your back on a padded mat with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor.
  2. Place your hands behind your head with your fingers lightly touching your head (not pulling on your neck).
  3. Keep your elbows pointing out to the sides.
  4. This is your starting position with your torso flat on the mat.
  5. Engage your core and begin to lift your upper back off the mat.
  6. As you crunch up, rotate your torso to one side, bringing your elbow toward the opposite knee (right elbow toward left knee).
  7. Hold the contracted position for a second at the top, feeling the oblique squeeze on the working side.
  8. Lower your upper back and shoulders back down to the starting position in a controlled manner.
  9. Repeat on the opposite side (left elbow toward right knee).
  10. Continue alternating sides for the recommended amount of repetitions.

Tips

  • Do not pull on your neck or head; lightly support with your hands to avoid straining your cervical spine.
  • Move deliberately and controlled; jerky movements reduce effectiveness and increase injury risk.
  • Focus on rotating your torso and contracting your obliques; avoid just bending to the side without rotation.
  • Breathe out during the crunch phase and breathe in during the lowering phase for optimal oxygen delivery.
  • If you want to increase difficulty, cross your arms over your chest or hold light weight on your chest.
  • Perform this exercise 3-4 times per week as part of a comprehensive core training program for balanced strength.
