A trunk flexion exercise performed while holding a dumbbell at your side, using controlled lateral bending motions to target the oblique muscles and lateral core.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright with feet hip-width apart, maintaining natural spinal curvature.
  2. Hold a dumbbell in one hand at your side with your arm extended or slightly bent.
  3. Keep your shoulders back, chest up, and core engaged for stability.
  4. Maintain slightly bent knees throughout the movement to protect your lower back.
  5. Bend your torso sideways toward the side holding the weight.
  6. Lower the dumbbell in a slow, controlled manner through approximately 45 degrees of lateral flexion.
  7. Pause briefly at the bottom of the movement, feeling the stretch on the opposite side.
  8. Return to the upright position using your oblique muscles, maintaining control throughout.

Tips

  • Perform slow and controlled movements; avoid bouncing or jerky motions.
  • Keep your torso facing forward; do not rotate your spine during the movement.
  • Breathe steadily; exhale as you bend and inhale as you return to standing.
  • Perform all repetitions on one side before switching sides with the dumbbell.
  • Start with lighter weight to master the movement pattern before progressively increasing load.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
