Rope Straight-Arm PulldownRope Straight-Arm Pulldown

The rope straight-arm pulldown isolates the lats by pulling a rope attachment downward while keeping the arms straight. This movement effectively targets the latissimus dorsi without significant arm involvement.

Instructions

  1. Attach a rope to a high pulley and make your weight selection.
  2. Stand a couple feet back from the pulley with your feet staggered and take the rope with both hands.
  3. Lean forward from the hip, keeping your back straight, with your arms extended up in front of you. This is your starting position.
  4. Keeping your arms straight, extend the shoulder to pull the rope down toward your thighs.
  5. Pause at the bottom of the motion, squeezing your lats.
  6. Return to the starting position without allowing the weight to fully rest on the stack.
  7. Avoid bending your elbows throughout the movement.
  8. Complete all repetitions before resting.

Tips

  • Keep your core engaged to maintain a stable torso throughout the set.
  • Focus on feeling the contraction in your lats rather than moving heavy weight.
  • A slight forward lean at the hips helps isolate the lats better.
  • Control the movement on both the descent and ascent.
  • This exercise pairs well with compound rowing movements for complete back development.
  • Start with moderate weight to master the movement pattern before increasing load.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
