Straight-Arm Pulldown

An isolation lat exercise performed with a cable machine using a straight-arm movement pattern to develop back width and latissimus dorsi strength.
Instructions
- Stand in front of a cable machine with a wide bar attachment positioned at the high pulley.
- Grasp the bar with a pronated grip (palms facing down) at a width slightly wider than shoulder-width.
- Step backward approximately two feet and position your feet at shoulder-width apart.
- Bend slightly at the hips, approximately 20-30 degrees, with your arms fully extended in front of you at roughly shoulder height.
- Keep your core engaged and chest up throughout the movement.
- Pull the bar downward by contracting your lats, keeping your arms straight with only a slight bend in the elbows.
- Bring the bar down to approximately hip level at the completion of the movement.
- Return the bar to the starting position in a controlled manner with arms nearly straight.
- Exhale as you pull down, inhale as you return to the start.
Tips
- Maintain straight arms throughout the movement to isolate the lats effectively.
- Focus on pulling with your lats rather than using your arms to drive the movement.
- The slight forward bend ensures proper lat involvement and range of motion.
- Keep a slight bend in the elbows to reduce stress on the joints.
- This exercise is excellent for building lat width and strength.
- Control the weight throughout the entire range of motion for maximum effectiveness.
- Perform this exercise after compound pulling movements for optimal lat activation.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
