Straight-Arm Pulldown (Rope Attachment)
An isolation lat exercise using a rope attachment on a cable machine, performed with straight arms to engage the latissimus dorsi.
Instructions
- Stand in front of a cable machine with a rope attachment positioned at the high pulley.
- Grasp the ends of the rope with both hands using a neutral grip (palms facing inward).
- Position your feet at shoulder-width apart and step back slightly so the cable is taut.
- Bend slightly at the hips and extend your arms straight out in front of you at approximately shoulder height.
- Pull the rope downward by contracting your lats while keeping your arms straight.
- Continue pulling until the rope reaches approximately hip level.
- Slowly return the rope to the starting position with a controlled movement.
- Exhale as you pull down, inhale as you return to the starting position.
Tips
- Maintain straight arms throughout the movement for optimal lat isolation.
- Focus on pulling with your lats rather than using your arms to drive the movement.
- Keep a slight bend in the elbows to reduce joint stress and maintain tension.
- The rope attachment allows for a slightly different range of motion compared to a bar.
- Use a weight that allows complete control throughout the entire movement.
- This variation can be performed at the end of a back workout as a finishing exercise.
- Keep your shoulders packed and avoid shrugging during the movement.
- Control the weight on both the descent and return for maximum lat activation.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
