Primary Muscles

A traps isolation movement using a wider snatch forearms, emphasizing the upper traps and providing additional stability challenge.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright with feet at shoulder width, holding a barbell using a snatch grip (significantly wider than shoulder width).
  2. Position the barbell at arm’s length in front of your thighs with a pronated grip.
  3. Keep your arms straight throughout the entire movement.
  4. Maintain an upright posture with a neutral spine and slight forward gaze.
  5. Elevate your shoulders upward as high as possible by contracting your traps muscles.
  6. Squeeze your traps firmly at the top of the movement for a brief pause.
  7. Slowly lower your shoulders back to the starting position in a controlled manner.
  8. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • The wider grip increases stability demands and provides a different angle of trap activation.
  • Keep your arms completely straight; this is a shoulder movement, not an arm movement.
  • Avoid rolling your shoulders; focus on straight vertical elevation.
  • The wider grip may reduce the amount of weight you can use compared to conventional shrugs.
  • This variation is excellent for Olympic lifters looking to develop trap stability.
  • Avoid using momentum; use controlled, deliberate movements.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
