A standing hamstring curl using cable resistance with an ankle attachment. Isolates the hamstrings while requiring core stability in the standing position.

Instructions

  1. Stand facing a cable machine with the pulley positioned at ankle height.
  2. Attach an ankle cuff to your working leg or use a single-leg cable attachment.
  3. Hold onto a machine support with both hands for balance.
  4. Keep your working leg relatively straight with a slight knee bend.
  5. Curl your heel up toward your glutes by flexing your hamstring.
  6. Achieve a full range of motion, bringing your heel as close to your glutes as possible.
  7. Lower your leg back to the starting position with control.
  8. Complete all reps before switching legs.

Tips

  • Use the machine support to stabilize yourself, allowing you to focus on hamstring activation.
  • The standing position requires additional balance and core engagement compared to lying or seated variations.
  • Maintain an upright torso and avoid excessive hip motion during the curl.
  • The constant cable tension provides excellent muscle-building stimulus throughout the movement.
  • Use moderate weight and controlled movements to prevent swinging and momentum.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
