An advanced isometric hold where the body is suspended horizontally face-up from a bar with legs in a wide straddle position. Demonstrates exceptional pulling strength and body control.
Instructions
- Grip a pull-up bar or rings with a supinated grip (palms facing forward) at shoulder-width apart.
- Pull yourself upward and into a horizontal position with your body parallel to the ground, chest facing upward.
- Separate your legs into a wide straddle position (wider than hip-width) to reduce the difficulty compared to a full front lever.
- Maintain a hollow body position with your core engaged, shoulders packed, and lats actively engaged.
- Keep your chest high and avoid allowing your hips to sag downward.
- Hold this position for the prescribed duration, maintaining a rigid horizontal line through your body.
- Lower yourself in a controlled manner back to the floor or jump down.
Tips
- The straddle position is an important progression step toward achieving a full front lever.
- Begin with holds of 5-10 seconds and gradually build duration as strength increases.
- This movement requires substantial pulling strength, lat engagement, and core stability.
- Progress by gradually narrowing your leg position as you develop strength.
- Maintain shoulder health by warming up thoroughly before attempting this exercise.
- Practice from a raised platform to reduce the leverage demand if needed.
- This is an elite-level bodyweight exercise that takes considerable time to master.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
