An upright row performed with an EZ-curl bar. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and lift the bar close to your body to chin height with elbows flared.

Instructions

  1. Stand straight with your feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Hold the SZ-bar with an overhand grip on your thighs with arms stretched and a slight bend at the elbows.
  3. Lift the bar close to your body, keeping it near your torso as you raise it.
  4. Continue lifting until the bar reaches chin height, with elbows pointing out to form a V shape at the top.
  5. Make a short pause at the top of the movement to feel the contraction.
  6. Lower the bar slowly back to the starting position with control.

Tips

  • The curved SZ-bar reduces stress on the wrists compared to straight bars.
  • Keep the bar close to your body throughout the entire movement.
  • Lead with your elbows, not your hands, to maximize shoulder and trap activation.
  • Avoid leaning back or using momentum to lift the weight.
  • Control both the ascent and descent for better muscle development.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
