Secondary Muscles

A lateral movement pattern that strengthens the inner and outer thighs, glutes, and quadriceps while improving frontal plane stability and mobility.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright holding kettlebells at your sides or at chest height.
  2. Take a wide step directly to the side by stepping your foot out laterally.
  3. Shift your weight to the stepping leg and bend that knee as you hinge at the hip.
  4. Keep your non-stepping leg straight and press your foot into the ground for stability.
  5. Drive through your stepping leg to return to standing and complete the repetition.
  6. Perform all prescribed reps on one side, then switch and repeat.

Tips

  • Step wide enough to feel a stretch in your inner thigh and to emphasize the adductors.
  • Keep your torso upright rather than leaning excessively to maintain proper loading.
  • This movement improves frontal plane stability and addresses movement in often-neglected planes.
  • Perform slowly and controlled rather than bouncing or using momentum.
  • Lateral lunges improve mobility in the hips and inner thighs.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
