A rotational core exercise using cable resistance at chest height to strengthen the obliques and improve rotational stability and power.

Instructions

  1. Stand perpendicular to a cable machine with the pulley at chest height.
  2. Grip the handle with both hands at chest level, arms slightly bent.
  3. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart with hips stationary facing forward.
  4. Rotate your torso away from the machine, moving the cable across your body.
  5. Control the movement to achieve a full range of rotation without momentum.
  6. Pause at the end range and feel the oblique contraction.
  7. Return to center with controlled movement against the cable tension.
  8. Complete all reps on one side, then turn and repeat on the other side.

Tips

  • Keep your hips and lower body completely stationary throughout the movement.
  • The rotation should come entirely from your thoracic spine and core, not your legs.
  • Move deliberately and avoid using momentum to bounce out of the starting position.
  • The constant cable tension provides stimulus throughout the entire range of motion.
  • Breathe out during the rotation and inhale on the return to center.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
