Primary Muscles

A rotational core exercise that mimics a chopping motion using cable resistance. Develops core strength, rotational power, and oblique definition.

Instructions

  1. Stand perpendicular to a cable machine with the pulley positioned at approximately shoulder height.
  2. Grab the pulley handle with both hands, arms fully extended across your body.
  3. Keep your body facing forward with your hips stable and feet shoulder-width apart.
  4. Pull the handle across your body in a diagonal chopping motion toward the opposite hip.
  5. Rotate your torso and drive through the movement, extending your arms fully.
  6. Hold for 1 second at the end of the movement and feel the oblique contraction.
  7. Slowly return to the starting position with control.
  8. Complete all reps on one side, then turn around and repeat on the other side.

Tips

  • The diagonal chopping motion targets the obliques through both flexion and rotation.
  • Keep your hips stationary to ensure the movement comes from your core and torso.
  • The constant cable tension provides stimulus throughout the entire range of motion.
  • Move with control and deliberate speed to maximize core engagement.
  • Breathe out during the chopping motion and inhale on the return.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
