Waiter Curl (Dumbbell)
A curl variation where the dumbbell is held overhead in a neutral position and curled downward, combining bicep work with shoulder stability and core engagement.
Instructions
- Stand upright with feet at hip or shoulder width, holding a single dumbbell overhead with one arm.
- Your arm should be fully extended with a neutral grip, with the dumbbell’s top plate resting in your palm.
- Keep your shoulders level and your core engaged to maintain stability.
- Lower the dumbbell by bending your elbow, bringing the dumbbell down toward your shoulder.
- Keep your upper arm stationary and perpendicular to the floor during the descent.
- Bring the dumbbell until your forearm is nearly parallel to the floor, feeling a stretch in your biceps.
- Drive the dumbbell back overhead by extending your elbow with power.
- Complete all repetitions on one side before switching to the other arm.
Tips
- The overhead position adds a stability challenge while the biceps curl, engaging the shoulders and core
- Keep your upper arm stationary—movement should occur only at the elbow joint
- Maintain an upright posture throughout; do not lean backward or rotate your hips
- Use a controlled tempo to maximize bicep activation and shoulder stability
- Start with lighter weights until you master the movement and stability requirements
- This variation builds exceptional bicep strength while improving shoulder stability
