Shoulder isolation exercise using cables in a diagonal pattern, targeting the shoulders and upper back with a unique range of motion.

Instructions

  1. Stand in front of a cable machine with one handle set at the lowest position on the opposite side.
  2. Grasp the handle with one hand using a neutral grip across your body.
  3. Keep your arm relatively straight with a slight elbow bend.
  4. Raise the handle diagonally upward and across your body toward the opposite shoulder.
  5. Achieve maximum contraction of the shoulder muscles at the top of the movement.
  6. Lower the handle back to the starting position in a controlled manner.

Tips

  • The diagonal movement pattern engages the shoulders from a unique angle.
  • Keep a slight bend in your elbow throughout to reduce shoulder joint stress.
  • Move in a controlled, smooth manner without jerking or using momentum.
  • Maintain constant tension on the working shoulder throughout the movement.
  • Complete all reps on one side before switching to the opposite side.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
