A compound exercise combining a forward lunge with an overhead kettlebell hold, developing lower body strength, shoulder stability, and core control simultaneously.

Instructions

  1. Press kettlebell overhead with one arm, achieving a locked-out stable position.
  2. Step forward with the opposite leg into a lunge position while maintaining the overhead position.
  3. Lower your body by bending both knees until your back knee approaches the ground.
  4. Keep your front knee directly above your ankle and maintain an upright torso.
  5. Drive through your front heel to return to standing while maintaining the overhead position.
  6. Complete prescribed reps on one side, then switch arms and legs.

Tips

  • Maintain the overhead lock-out position throughout the entire lunge to maximize core and shoulder engagement.
  • Keep your core braced to prevent excessive lower back extension and maintain stability.
  • Move deliberately and maintain balance rather than rushing through the movement.
  • This challenging exercise builds lower body strength, shoulder stability, and unilateral coordination.
  • Start light and progress conservatively as this is an advanced compound movement.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
