Primary Muscles

A fundamental pulling movement performed on the rings where you pull yourself toward the rings from an inverted position, building back and arm strength.

Instructions

  1. Position yourself in an inverted hang with rings at chest height
  2. Keep your body rigid and straight
  3. Pull yourself toward the rings by retracting your shoulder blades
  4. Drive your elbows backward and downward
  5. Bring your chest toward the rings
  6. Lower yourself back to the starting position with control

Tips

  • Start with a more vertical body angle if full horizontal is too difficult
  • Focus on pulling with your back, not just your arms
  • Keep your body in a straight line throughout
  • Progress by increasing body angle or range of motion
  • Excellent foundational pulling exercise
  • Build the strength systematically before progressing to harder variations
  • Maintain scapular retraction throughout the movement
  • Control the descent to maximize strength development

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.

Goal Sets Reps
Gain strength 3 7 reps
Build muscle 3 10 reps
Build endurance 3 14 reps
