Standing Rope CrunchStanding Rope Crunch

A standing cable exercise that targets the abdominals through spinal flexion using a rope attachment for enhanced muscle engagement.

Instructions

  1. Attach a rope to a high pulley on a cable machine and select an appropriate weight.
  2. Stand facing away from the cable tower with the rope draped over your shoulders, holding both ends with your hands near your upper chest.
  3. Flex your spine by crunching downward, driving your elbows toward your hips and compressing your abdominals maximally.
  4. Hold the peak contraction for a moment to maximize muscle engagement.
  5. Return to the starting position in a controlled manner by extending your spine.
  6. Repeat for the recommended number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Keep your hips stationary and avoid leaning backward at the start.
  • Focus on spinal flexion rather than hip flexion for proper core engagement.
  • Use a controlled pace on both the descent and return phases.
  • Avoid using momentum to pull the cable down.
  • Start with a moderate weight to master the movement pattern.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
