Primary Muscles

A dynamic push-up variation where you shift your weight side-to-side, resembling typing motions. Builds lateral chest stability and shoulder strength.

Instructions

  1. Start in a standard push-up position with your hands slightly wider than shoulder width, body straight from head to heels.
  2. Lower your chest toward the floor while maintaining a plank position.
  3. As you push back up, shift your weight to one side, extending the opposite arm forward as if typing.
  4. Return to center and lower for another repetition.
  5. On the next rep, shift to the opposite side.
  6. Keep your core tight and body aligned throughout the movement.

Tips

  • Maintain a neutral spine and avoid rotating your hips excessively.
  • Move deliberately and controlled to maximize chest and shoulder engagement.
  • Progress by increasing reps or adding resistance with a weight vest.
  • If standard push-ups are challenging, perform on your knees initially.
  • Focus on keeping your shoulders packed and stable during lateral shifts.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
