An isometric variation of the push-up where you hold the bottom or top position statically, building chest and core stability without movement.

Instructions

  1. Begin in a standard push-up position with your hands slightly wider than shoulder width and your body forming a straight line from head to heels.
  2. Lower yourself until your arms are bent at approximately 90 degrees (middle of the push-up movement).
  3. Alternatively, you can hold the top position with arms fully extended.
  4. Engage your core, chest, and triceps maximally while maintaining the static position.
  5. Keep your body in a perfect plank position with no sagging at the hips or elevation of your buttocks.
  6. Hold this position for the designated time, typically 20-60 seconds.
  7. Return to the starting position or rest for the recommended recovery period.
  8. Repeat for additional sets.

Tips

  • Maintain maximum body tension throughout the hold; contract your core, glutes, and chest intensely.
  • Keep your shoulders packed back and down, away from your ears.
  • For an easier variation, perform the hold from your knees or against an inclined surface.
  • For a more challenging variation, perform the hold from an even lower position or with an elevated hand position.
  • Focus on breathing steadily; never hold your breath during the isometric hold.
  • This exercise is particularly effective for building upper body stability and endurance.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
