A lat pulldown exercise using a V-shaped bar attachment to provide a neutral grip option. Excellent for lat development with less shoulder stress than wide grips.

Instructions

  1. Sit at a cable machine with the lat pulldown pulley positioned above head height.
  2. Attach a V-bar to the cable and grab it with both hands using a neutral grip.
  3. Adjust the leg attachment to secure your legs and prevent swinging.
  4. Maintain an upright posture with your chest up and core engaged.
  5. Pull the V-bar down toward your chest by driving with your elbows.
  6. Feel the contraction in your lats as the bar approaches your upper chest.
  7. Slowly return the bar to the starting position with control.

Tips

  • The neutral grip of the V-bar is easier on your shoulders compared to wide grip variations.
  • Drive with your elbows rather than pulling with your arms to maximize lat engagement.
  • Maintain upright posture throughout to properly isolate the lat muscles.
  • The constant cable tension provides stimulus throughout the entire range of motion.
  • Chest-to-bar contact maximizes the range of motion and lat stretch compared to behind-the-neck variations.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
