Primary Muscles

A lat pulldown exercise performed with a wide grip attachment to emphasize the outer lats and provide a greater range of motion.

Instructions

  1. Sit at a cable machine with the lat pulldown pulley positioned above head height.
  2. Attach a wide grip bar to the cable (wider than shoulder-width).
  3. Grab the bar at the ends with both hands using an overhand grip.
  4. Adjust the leg attachment to secure your legs and prevent swinging.
  5. Maintain an upright posture with your chest up and core engaged.
  6. Pull the bar down toward your upper chest by driving with your elbows.
  7. Feel the contraction in your outer lats and squeeze at the bottom.
  8. Slowly return the bar to the starting position with control.

Tips

  • The wide grip emphasizes the outer lats more than neutral or narrow grips.
  • Keep your chest up and avoid excessive backward lean during the pull.
  • Drive with your elbows rather than pulling with your hands.
  • The constant cable tension provides stimulus throughout the entire range of motion.
  • Chest-to-bar contact provides a greater range of motion and lat stretch than behind-the-neck variations.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
