Ring False Grip Pull-Up
A pull-up variation on rings using a false grip position, building the strength and wrist conditioning necessary for transitioning toward muscle-ups.
Instructions
- Grip each ring with a false grip, wrapping your hands around with palms facing downward and inward.
- Hang from the rings with arms fully extended, pressing downward against the rings with your wrists.
- Pack your shoulders and engage your lats in preparation.
- Pull yourself upward by driving your elbows down and back toward your ribcage.
- Continue pulling until your chest approaches the rings at the top position.
- Squeeze your back and biceps at the top.
- Lower yourself under control back to full arm extension.
- Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Tips
- Master standard ring pull-ups before attempting false grip pull-ups
- The false grip position creates wrist discomfort initially; build tolerance gradually
- Your wrists must be prepared and conditioned for this movement
- Keep your shoulders packed and engaged throughout the pull
- The false grip position is a direct progression toward muscle-ups
- Perform 3-8 repetitions depending on current strength level
- Your forearms will be significantly engaged due to the gripping demand
- Maintain constant wrist pressure downward against the rings
- This is an excellent intermediate step between pull-ups and muscle-ups
- Combine with false grip holds to build necessary wrist and forearm strength
