A shoulder pressing exercise where a weight plate is held and pressed from chest height to arm's length overhead, developing pressing strength.
Instructions
- Stand upright with your feet shoulder-width apart and your core engaged.
- Hold a weight plate at chest height with both hands, elbows positioned under the plate and bent to approximately 90 degrees.
- Maintain a neutral spine and keep your shoulders relaxed back.
- Take a deep breath.
- Exhale and press the plate upward and slightly forward, extending your arms fully but not locking your elbows.
- Maintain body control throughout the movement; avoid arching your lower back excessively.
- Pause briefly at the top with the plate at arm’s length.
- Inhale and lower the plate back down to chest height with control.
- Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.
Tips
- Keep your core engaged throughout to maintain stability and protect your lower back.
- Press in a controlled manner; avoid using momentum or bouncing the weight.
- Maintain a stable base with your feet; avoid shifting your weight during the press.
- This is an effective pressing exercise that can be performed unilaterally or bilaterally.
- For unilateral (one-handed) plate presses, you may need to engage your core more intensely.
- Use a weight that allows for controlled repetitions with good form.
- Breathe steadily; exhale during the press and inhale during the descent.
Recommended starting values
