Primary Muscles

A seated pressing variation with the legs extended that prevents lower body drive, isolating and challenging the pressing muscles more directly.

Instructions

  1. Sit on the floor with your legs extended in front of you, back upright.
  2. Clean two kettlebells to shoulder height with palms facing forward.
  3. Position your feet together or in a staggered position on the floor.
  4. Maintain an upright torso and engage your core throughout.
  5. Press the kettlebells directly overhead by extending your elbows until your arms are fully locked out.
  6. Lower the kettlebells back to shoulder height in a controlled manner and repeat.

Tips

  • Maintain an upright posture throughout; avoid leaning back excessively to press the weight.
  • The seated position eliminates leg drive, making this a more shoulder-intensive pressing variation.
  • Keep your core braced to maintain a stable base and prevent excessive lower back extension.
  • Use lighter weight than standing presses due to the reduced stability and increased shoulder demand.
  • A slight backward lean from your hips is acceptable if needed to maintain balance, but avoid rounding your spine.
  • Control the eccentric phase of the press to maximize time under tension and shoulder stability.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
