A calf isolation exercise on the leg press machine. The lifter positions the balls of the feet on the lower edge of the platform and presses through plantar flexion to develop the gastrocnemius and soleus, with heavy loading capacity.
Instructions
- Sit on the leg press machine with your back and head resting against the padded supports.
- Press the platform out to full extension with your quads, keeping a slight bend in your knees so they are not locked.
- Slide your feet down the platform so only the balls of your feet remain on the lower edge, with your heels extending off.
- Keep your toes pointed forward (or angled slightly out) and your knees stationary throughout the movement.
- Press through the balls of your feet, rising onto your toes to reach maximum plantar flexion.
- Squeeze your calves hard at the top and hold briefly.
- Lower your heels back down under control, feeling a deep stretch at the bottom.
- Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.
Tips
- Use a full range of motion: deep stretch at the bottom, hard squeeze at the top.
- Keep your knees stationary — only the ankles should move.
- Press through the balls of your feet, not the entire foot.
- Control the descent; avoid bouncing at the bottom for joint safety.
- The soleus is recruited more with the knees bent, so keep that slight knee bend consistent.
- This variation tolerates heavy loading well; pair with standing calf raises for full development.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
