Standing Calf Raise (Dumbbell)

Standing calf raise performed with dumbbells, offering greater freedom of movement and balance challenge while isolating the calf muscles.
Instructions
- Stand upright holding a dumbbell in each hand at your sides with a neutral grip. Position your feet hip to shoulder-width apart.
- Place the balls of your feet on a sturdy, stable elevation (a 2-3 inch step or platform is ideal) with your heels extending off and touching the floor. This is the starting position.
- Take a deep breath and brace your core. With your toes pointing forward (or angled inward or outward depending on your preference), raise your heels off the floor as high as possible by contracting your calves.
- Continue the upward motion until you’ve achieved maximum plantarflexion, feeling a strong contraction in your calves.
- Hold the top position for a full second while squeezing the calf muscles.
- Inhale as you slowly lower your heels back to the starting position, achieving a full stretch in the calf.
- Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.
Tips
- Maintain an upright torso throughout—avoid leaning forward or backward excessively.
- Keep your core tight to maintain balance and stability with dumbbells.
- Vary your foot positioning (forward, inward, outward) across different sessions to develop the calf from multiple angles.
- Use a controlled tempo, especially on the descent, to maximize time under tension.
- The elevation is crucial—the greater the range of motion from the stretch position, the more effective the exercise.
- For increased difficulty, perform single-leg variations or use heavier dumbbells.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
