A calf isolation exercise performed on a specialized lever machine that loads the calves through a padded support at the hips and lower back.
Instructions
- Approach the donkey calf raise machine and position your lower back and hips under the padded lever provided.
- The padded lever should rest against your lower back or hip area for support and load distribution.
- Place both hands on the side handles and secure yourself against the machine.
- Position the balls of your feet on the calf platform with your heels extending off the edge.
- Select the machine weight and ensure everything is set securely.
- Raise your heels as high as possible by extending your ankles and flexing your calves powerfully.
- Keep your knees stationary throughout the movement—no bending should occur at the knees.
- At the top of the movement, squeeze your calves and hold for a brief moment.
- Lower your heels back toward the ground in a controlled manner, achieving a stretch at the bottom.
- Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.
Tips
- Vary your foot position to target different areas of the calf: toes forward hits the entire calf, toes inward targets the lateral head, and toes outward targets the medial head.
- Keep your knees straight and locked throughout the entire set—bending the knees reduces calf involvement.
- Ensure the padded lever is positioned comfortably to avoid back discomfort.
- Perform a full range of motion from a bottom stretch to a complete top contraction for maximum calf development.
- High repetitions (12-20 reps) are effective for calf training, as calves are primarily slow-twitch muscle fibers.
- Control the descent to maximize time under tension and improve muscle engagement.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
