An isolation movement for the calf muscles performed on one leg, increasing the load on each calf individually. Improves ankle stability and unilateral calf strength without external weight.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright with good posture, feet hip-width apart.
  2. Place one hand on a wall, bar, or sturdy object for light balance support if needed.
  3. Lift one leg off the ground by bending the knee, raising your foot behind you.
  4. Distribute all body weight onto the standing leg’s ball of the foot.
  5. Rise up onto the toes of the standing leg by extending your ankle and contracting your calf.
  6. Achieve full plantarflexion at the peak of the movement, feeling the calf muscle contract.
  7. Lower yourself back down to the starting position with control.
  8. Complete all repetitions on one leg before switching to the other side.

Tips

  • Lighter balance support from your hand is fine; avoid using it to assist the movement.
  • Control the lowering phase for 2-3 seconds to maximize time under tension.
  • Perform high repetitions (15-25 reps) as the calves respond well to volume.
  • This movement requires significant ankle stability; progress gradually if balance is limited.
  • Perform 2-3 sets per leg for complete calf development.
  • Keep your core engaged to maintain stability throughout the set.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
