An isolation exercise using a sled machine to target the calf muscles through plantar flexion movement against loaded resistance.

Instructions

  1. Load the sled machine with the appropriate weight for controlled calf raises.
  2. Position yourself on the sled platform with your shoulders under the yoke or handles.
  3. Stand upright with your legs nearly straight (slight knee bend is acceptable).
  4. Place the balls of your feet on the raised platform, with heels hanging off the edge.
  5. Push through the balls of your feet, raising your heels as high as possible by contracting your calves.
  6. Rise onto your toes and pause briefly at the top position, feeling the calf contraction.
  7. Slowly lower your heels back down toward the starting position.
  8. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Use a full range of motion, allowing your heels to drop below foot level at the bottom.
  • Move deliberately and avoid bouncing at the bottom of the movement.
  • Control both the up and down phases for maximum muscle engagement.
  • Perform higher repetitions (12-20) to build calf endurance and definition.
  • Vary foot position slightly (toes in, toes out) to target different aspects of the calf.
  • The calves are relatively small muscles but respond well to consistent, high-volume training.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
