A machine-based calf isolation exercise where you raise one leg's calf against a loaded lever or platform. Provides guided movement and allows for progressive resistance without balance concerns.

Instructions

  1. Position yourself in the calf raise machine with the pad resting on your shoulders or upper back.
  2. Place the ball of one foot on the platform while the other leg is lifted off.
  3. Ensure your standing foot is positioned with the ball under the raised portion of the platform.
  4. Select an appropriate weight on the machine for your strength level.
  5. Rise up onto the toes of your standing foot, lifting your heel as high as possible.
  6. Achieve full plantarflexion at the top, holding briefly to maximize contraction.
  7. Lower the heel back down to the starting position in a controlled manner.
  8. Complete all repetitions on one leg, then switch to the other side.

Tips

  • Adjust the machine pad height so it sits comfortably on your upper shoulders.
  • Control both the lifting and lowering phases of the movement.
  • Use a weight that allows for 10-20 repetitions per leg, as calves respond well to higher reps.
  • The machine guides movement, allowing focus purely on muscular contraction.
  • Keep good posture throughout; avoid excessive forward lean.
  • Pause briefly at the top of each rep to fully engage the calf muscle.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
