Calf Raise Single-Leg (Barbell)

A unilateral calf isolation exercise performed standing on one leg with a barbell across the upper traps, maximising load on each calf while also challenging balance.
Instructions
- Set the barbell on a rack at shoulder height and step under it, positioning it across your upper traps.
- Unrack the barbell and step away from the rack with feet shoulder-width apart.
- Shift your weight onto one leg and lift the other foot off the ground, bending the knee to hold it behind you.
- Rest one or two fingers on an upright or wall for balance support only — do not push through your arms.
- With the ball of your working foot on the floor (or the edge of a raised platform for greater range), rise up onto your toes by extending your ankle as high as possible.
- Squeeze the calf hard at the top of the movement and hold for a brief pause.
- Lower your heel back down slowly and under control until you feel a full stretch in the calf.
- Complete all repetitions on one side before switching legs.
Tips
- Keep the balance hand as light as possible — it is there for safety, not to unload the calf.
- Use a calf block or plate under the ball of your foot to increase the range of motion and stretch at the bottom.
- Lower in 3 seconds and pause at the bottom to eliminate the stretch reflex and increase time under tension.
- Perform all reps on one leg before switching to ensure symmetrical fatigue and accurate strength comparison.
- Start with a lighter load than you would use for a bilateral calf raise — single-leg balance under a barbell is demanding.
- Keep your core braced and torso upright throughout; avoid leaning into the bar.
- The gastrocnemius is best targeted with the knee straight; a slight knee bend shifts more emphasis to the soleus.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
