Chest Press (Machine)Chest Press (Machine)

A beginner-friendly compound exercise for chest development using a dedicated chest press machine, ideal for safe, controlled pressing.

Instructions

  1. Sit down on the chest press machine and select your desired weight.
  2. Step on the leg lever provided by the machine to help bring the handles forward so you can grab them comfortably.
  3. Grab the handles with a palms-down grip and lift your elbows so that your upper arms are parallel to the floor.
  4. Position your upper arms to the sides of your torso.
  5. Your forearms will be pointing forward as you grasp the handles.
  6. Once you bring the handles forward and fully extend your arms, you will be at the starting position.
  7. As you breathe in, pull the handles back toward you in a controlled manner.
  8. As you flex your pecs and breathe out, push the handles away from you and extend your arms fully.
  9. Hold the contracted position for a second before going back to the starting position.
  10. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.
  11. When finished, step on the leg lever again and slowly allow the handles to return to their original place.

Tips

  • Maintain proper posture throughout; keep your back against the pad and feet firmly planted.
  • Move deliberately and with full control; avoid jerking the handles, which reduces chest engagement.
  • The machine design provides stability, allowing you to focus purely on pressing with your chest, shoulders, and triceps.
  • Lower the handles with control on the eccentric phase; this phase is crucial for muscle growth.
  • Start with moderate weight to learn the movement pattern and establish mind-muscle connection with your chest.
  • This machine variation is excellent for beginners and for isolating the pressing muscles with minimal stabilizer muscle involvement.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
