Decline Bench Press (Machine)Decline Bench Press (Machine)

A compound pressing exercise using a decline-angled machine to target the lower chest, shoulders, and triceps.

Instructions

  1. Sit down on the decline chest press machine with your back firmly against the padded backrest, which is positioned at a decline angle (head lower than hips).
  2. Select your desired weight using the pin or selectorized mechanism.
  3. Grip the handles with your hands at chest height, using a neutral or slightly pronated grip (palms facing down or slightly inward).
  4. Position your feet firmly on the footrest or floor for stability.
  5. Your shoulders should be relaxed and pulled back slightly, chest up.
  6. Take a breath in to prepare, then press the handles forward and slightly upward in a smooth, controlled motion.
  7. Fully extend your arms at the end of the press, feeling the contraction in your lower chest.
  8. Exhale as you extend, and briefly hold the fully extended position.
  9. Inhale as you slowly bring the handles back to the starting position in a controlled manner, maintaining tension throughout.
  10. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • Maintain full contact with the backrest throughout the movement; do not allow your upper back to lift or round forward.
  • Keep the handles at approximately mid-chest height or slightly lower to emphasize lower chest activation.
  • Press in a slightly upward angle (away from you and upward) to maximize lower chest engagement rather than pressing straight back.
  • Control the eccentric (return) phase to maximize time under tension and lower chest activation.
  • Avoid bouncing or jerking the handles; use smooth, controlled motion throughout.
  • The decline angle naturally shifts emphasis to the lower chest compared to a horizontal chest press machine.
  • Start with moderate weight to master the movement pattern before increasing load.
  • This machine variation is excellent for beginners and provides stability, allowing you to focus purely on pressing with your lower chest.

Recommended starting values
