A beginner-friendly compound exercise for chest development using a wide grip on a dedicated machine, emphasizing outer chest activation.

Instructions

  1. Sit down on the chest press machine and select your desired weight.
  2. Position your back firmly against the backrest pad of the machine.
  3. Grab the handles with a palms-down grip using a wide hand position, positioning your hands wider than shoulder-width.
  4. Your upper arms should be nearly parallel to the floor with elbows pointing outward at a wider angle than normal grip.
  5. Feet should be flat on the floor or the machine’s foot platform for stability; this is your starting position.
  6. As you exhale, push the handles away from you and extend your arms in front of your body.
  7. Maintain the wide hand position throughout the movement to emphasize the outer chest muscles.
  8. Squeeze your chest muscles at the end of the movement and hold the contraction for a second.
  9. As you inhale, slowly bring the handles back toward your chest in a controlled manner.
  10. Do not allow the handles to touch your chest at the bottom; maintain tension on the muscles.
  11. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.

Tips

  • The wider grip position emphasizes the outer chest more than standard grip positions.
  • Keep your back flat against the pad; avoid lifting your shoulders or torso during the movement.
  • Move deliberately and with full control; avoid jerking the handles, which reduces chest activation.
  • The machine provides stability, allowing you to focus purely on outer chest muscle engagement without balancing.
  • Lower the handles with control; the eccentric (returning) phase is important for muscle development.
  • This grip variation is excellent for addressing strength imbalances and developing balanced chest development.
