A chest pressing variation where two dumbbells are held pressed together throughout the movement, creating constant inward force that maximises chest activation. Sometimes called the Crush Press.

Instructions

  1. Lie flat on a bench holding a dumbbell in each hand above your chest, arms extended.
  2. Press the dumbbells firmly against each other so they are in full contact, palms facing each other or angled slightly inward.
  3. Maintaining constant inward pressure between the dumbbells, lower them together slowly toward mid-chest.
  4. Stop when your upper arms are roughly parallel to the floor (or slightly below), keeping the dumbbells pressed together throughout.
  5. Drive the dumbbells back up to the starting position, still squeezing them together, and lock out your arms.
  6. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.
  7. To dismount, carefully lower the dumbbells to your thighs before setting them down.

Tips

  • Keep the dumbbells in contact with each other for the entire set — the moment contact is lost the key stimulus disappears.
  • Use lighter weight than you would for a standard dumbbell bench press; the constant squeeze is fatiguing and control matters more than load.
  • Keep your feet flat on the floor, your back and glutes in contact with the bench, and your shoulder blades retracted and depressed.
  • Lower the weight under control — a 2–3 second descent increases time under tension and chest activation.
  • Squeeze your chest hard at the top of each rep before beginning the next descent.
  • If the dumbbells slip apart, reduce the weight or rest — forced contact with fatigued hands increases injury risk.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
