Primary Muscles

A rotational core exercise where kettlebells are swung side to side at chest height, building core stability, obliques, and functional rotational power.

Instructions

  1. Stand with feet slightly wider than shoulder-width, holding kettlebell(s) at chest height.
  2. Keep your hips and lower body relatively stationary throughout the movement.
  3. Rotate your torso side to side, swinging the kettlebell from one side of your body to the other.
  4. Move the kettlebell across your body at approximately chest height with smooth, controlled movements.
  5. Engage your obliques and core to power the rotational movement rather than relying on arm strength.
  6. Complete prescribed reps with consistent tempo and control.

Tips

  • Initiate the movement from your core and obliques rather than from your shoulders or arms.
  • Keep your hips relatively stable to isolate the rotational work in your core and obliques.
  • Perform the movement with control and moderate weight to maximize core engagement.
  • This exercise improves rotational stability and core strength in often-neglected planes.
  • Perform this movement for higher reps or longer sets to build core endurance.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
