Secondary Muscles

A compound core exercise that develops stability and anti-rotation strength by pressing cable resistance away from the body.

Instructions

  1. Set the cable pulley to chest height and attach a single handle.
  2. Stand perpendicular to the machine with the pulley at your side.
  3. Grasp the handle with both hands at your chest, close to your body.
  4. Engage your core and maintain an upright posture with feet shoulder-width apart.
  5. Press the handle straight out in front of your body, resisting the rotational force of the cable.
  6. Pause briefly at full arm extension, maintaining core stability.
  7. Return the handle to your chest in a controlled manner.

Tips

  • Focus on resisting rotation; the primary benefit comes from core stability against the cable pull.
  • Keep your torso stable and perpendicular to the machine throughout the movement.
  • Maintain a tall posture with your chest up and shoulders back.
  • Use a moderate weight that allows you to maintain control and proper form.
  • Perform equal repetitions on both sides for balanced core development.
  • This exercise is excellent for rotational stability and functional core strength.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
