Secondary Muscles

A compound rotational core exercise that develops core strength and control by pressing and rotating cable resistance.

Instructions

  1. Set the cable pulley to chest height and attach a single handle.
  2. Stand perpendicular to the machine with the pulley at your side.
  3. Grasp the handle with both hands at your chest, close to your body.
  4. Press the handle straight out in front of your body, resisting the rotational force of the cable.
  5. From the extended position, rotate your torso toward the cable, moving the handle across your body.
  6. Pause briefly at the end of the rotation, feeling your obliques contract.
  7. Return to the extended position, then bring the handle back to your chest.

Tips

  • Maintain core engagement throughout both the pressing and rotational phases.
  • Keep your torso stable during the press; rotation should occur from the extended position.
  • Control the rotational movement deliberately; avoid using momentum.
  • Use a moderate weight that allows you to maintain control and proper form.
  • Perform equal repetitions on both sides for balanced core development.
  • This variation combines anti-rotation stability with rotational power.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
