Ring Archer Push-Up
An asymmetrical pressing movement on rings where one arm bends while the other stays extended, creating an arrow shape and building unilateral pressing strength with rotational challenges.
Instructions
- Start in a plank position with both rings held at chest height, arms straight and shoulders engaged.
- Lower yourself toward the rings, but asymmetrically; bend one arm more than the other.
- As you descend, shift your body weight toward the arm that is bending more heavily.
- At the bottom, your body should be angled with one arm bent and the other arm extended.
- Press upward asymmetrically, pushing yourself back to the starting position.
- Maintain tension through your core and shoulders throughout the movement.
- Perform all repetitions on one side before switching to the other.
Tips
- This is an advanced variation; master standard ring push-ups first
- Keep your body rigid and core braced throughout the movement
- Rings will want to turn inward; resist this by actively rotating your hands
- Start with smaller archer angles before progressing to greater asymmetry
- This movement challenges anti-rotation and unilateral pressing strength
- Perform 3-8 reps on each side depending on current strength
- Excellent progression toward one-arm ring push-ups
- The unilateral emphasis builds exceptional shoulder stability
- Your shoulders and core must be well-conditioned for this movement
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
