A dynamic compound movement combining a front squat with an overhead press, developing leg strength and shoulder pressing power simultaneously.
Instructions
- Clean two kettlebells to shoulder height with palms facing forward and elbows bent.
- Position your feet hip-width apart with a slight forward lean.
- Descend into a full squat by bending your knees and hips, maintaining an upright torso.
- Drive through your heels and explosively extend your legs to stand up from the squat.
- As you extend your legs, use the momentum to drive the kettlebells overhead by extending your arms.
- Press the kettlebells straight overhead until your arms are fully extended and locked out.
- Lower the kettlebells back to shoulder height and immediately descend into the next squat.
Tips
- Use leg drive to initiate the press; the thrust from the squat provides momentum for the overhead movement.
- Keep your core braced throughout to maintain stability and protect your lower back during the squat.
- Maintain an upright torso during the squat to optimize force transfer from your legs to the press.
- The kettlebells should travel in a straight path overhead; avoid pressing them forward or at angles.
- Keep your shoulders packed and engaged as the bells come overhead to prevent shoulder strain.
- Breathe by inhaling during the squat descent and exhaling forcefully as you extend your legs and press overhead.
Recommended starting values
Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
