A compound full-body movement combining a squat with an overhead press, where the upward momentum from the squat is used to drive the dumbbells overhead.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright with feet at shoulder width, holding dumbbells at shoulder height with elbows bent at 90 degrees.
  2. Maintain an upright posture with your core engaged—this is your starting position.
  3. Descend into a squat by bending your knees and hips until your thighs are approximately parallel to the floor.
  4. Keep your torso upright and chest up throughout the descent.
  5. Drive explosively through your heels, extending your hips and knees to stand up.
  6. As you drive upward, use the momentum to press the dumbbells overhead, extending your arms fully.
  7. Bring the dumbbells back down to shoulder height and immediately descend into the next squat.
  8. Perform the exercise in a continuous, flowing motion.

Tips

  • Time the press to initiate as you drive through your legs—coordinate the upper and lower body movements
  • Keep your core tight throughout the squat and press to maintain stability and protect your spine
  • Press the dumbbells slightly forward rather than straight overhead for better shoulder mechanics
  • Use a controlled tempo to master the movement before increasing weight
  • This exercise demands good coordination; practice with lighter weights initially
  • Maintain upright posture during the squat to maximize lower body engagement and stability

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
