Secondary Muscles

A compound exercise combining a leg drive with an overhead press to build shoulder and leg strength using dumbbells.

Instructions

  1. Stand with feet hip-width apart, holding dumbbells at shoulder height.
  2. Keep your torso upright and core engaged.
  3. Dip slightly by bending your knees while keeping your weight in your heels.
  4. Explosively extend your hips and knees to drive the dumbbells upward.
  5. Press the dumbbells overhead using the momentum from your legs.
  6. Continue pressing until your arms are fully extended.
  7. Lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height in a controlled manner.
  8. Repeat for the prescribed number of repetitions.

Tips

  • The power comes from your legs; use them to propel the dumbbells upward
  • Maintain an upright torso throughout; avoid excessive arching
  • Time the leg drive with the pressing motion for smooth, efficient movement
  • This exercise allows you to press heavier weight than a strict shoulder press
  • The leg drive makes this a compound movement rather than a pure pressing exercise

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.
