Thruster (Dumbbell)
A full-body compound movement combining a squat with an overhead press, using the momentum from the lower body to drive the dumbbells overhead explosively.
Instructions
- Stand upright with feet at shoulder width, holding dumbbells at shoulder height with elbows bent.
- Maintain an upright posture with core engaged and shoulders ready to press.
- Descend into a squat by bending your knees and hips until your thighs are roughly parallel to the floor.
- Keep your chest up and torso upright throughout the descent.
- Explosively drive through your heels, extending your hips and knees to stand up powerfully.
- Simultaneously press the dumbbells overhead, extending your arms fully as you reach standing position.
- Stabilize the dumbbells overhead with engaged shoulders and core.
- Lower the dumbbells back to shoulder height and immediately transition into the next squat.
Tips
- Coordinate the squat drive and overhead press—time the press to occur as you extend your legs
- The momentum from the leg drive should assist the pressing motion, reducing upper body workload
- Keep your core braced throughout the entire movement for stability and safety
- Maintain an upright torso during the squat to ensure proper lower body mechanics
- This is a high-intensity, full-body movement; start with moderate weights to master coordination
- The thruster is excellent for developing explosive power and conditioning
