A plyometric exercise where you jump and alternate legs in a lunge position, building lower body explosive power and endurance.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright with your feet together and your arms at your sides or hands on your hips.
  2. Step your right foot forward and lower your body into a lunge position by bending both knees.
  3. Your front thigh should be parallel to the floor and your back knee should nearly touch the ground.
  4. Explosively jump upward from the lunge position, swinging your arms for momentum if desired.
  5. While airborne, switch leg positions by bringing your left leg forward and drawing your right leg back.
  6. Land in a lunge position with your left leg forward, immediately bending your knees to absorb the impact.
  7. Explosively jump again, switching legs mid-air to return your right leg forward.
  8. Continue alternating legs rapidly in a smooth, flowing jumping motion.
  9. Complete the desired number of total jumps or maintain the movement for a specific duration.

Tips

  • Land softly with bent knees and engaged core muscles to absorb impact and protect your joints.
  • Keep your torso upright and core engaged throughout the movement; avoid excessive forward lean.
  • Start with slower movements to master the technique, then increase speed as comfort improves.
  • Keep your front knee aligned over your ankle; avoid letting it collapse inward or travel excessively past your toes.
  • This exercise builds explosive leg power as well as muscular endurance.
  • Jumping lunges are highly metabolic, elevating heart rate quickly for cardiovascular benefits.
  • For lower-intensity variations, simply step rather than jump between lunge positions.
