A plyometric exercise using resistance bands to increase lower body power and horizontal jump distance.

Instructions

  1. Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart.
  2. Place a resistance band around your shoulders just below the neck.
  3. Stand on both ends of the band with your feet, anchoring it in place.
  4. Bend your knees and hips to prepare for an explosive jump.
  5. Explosively extend your hips, knees, and ankles while driving your arms forward.
  6. Jump forward as far as possible, using your arms for momentum.
  7. Land with both feet simultaneously and stick the landing with control.
  8. Reset your position and repeat for the desired number of repetitions.

Tips

  • The band resistance significantly increases power development requirements.
  • Explosive hip extension is the primary driver of horizontal distance.
  • Land softly with bent knees to absorb force and reduce injury risk.
  • Focus on maximum distance while maintaining control throughout the movement.
  • Measure your jump distance and track improvements over time.
  • Perform 3-5 sets of 3-6 reps for optimal power development and athleticism.

Recommended starting values

Sensible novice starting points for each goal, for a lifter aged 25–40. Scale down for smaller frames or older lifters. Treat the first set of any session as a discovery set.

Goal Sets Distance
Gain strength 3 300 m
Build muscle 3 700 m
